These days, astronomers use telescopes to look in various wavelengths of light. From high energy cosmic rays, gamma and X-rays, to visible light, infra red and radio waves.
There are also observe gravitational wave observatories that study ripples in space-time created when black holes and neutron stars collide!
Data from these sources can be usefully put together to understand what is going on at the target object.
Scubayorp Outreach took apart in this community project to build a backyard radio telescope.
It really is quite straight forward and yields fascinating results.
